India vs Afghanistan: FIFA World Cup Qualifiers End in a Goalless Draw

India's World Cup Dreams Dented

Highlights:

  • India and Afghanistan played to a 0-0 draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier.
  • Both teams had chances to score, but neither could find the back of the net.
  • The result leaves India's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup in jeopardy.

The Indian men's football team's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a setback on Thursday as they were held to a goalless draw by Afghanistan in their Group A match in Kolkata.

The result leaves India with just one point from their first two matches, and they now face an uphill task to qualify for the next round of the qualifiers.

India had the better of the chances in the first half, with Sunil Chhetri and Ashique Kuruniyan both going close. However, Afghanistan grew into the game in the second half and had a couple of good chances of their own.

The best chance for either team fell to Afghanistan's Mukhammad Amini in the 80th minute, but his shot was well saved by Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

The draw leaves India bottom of Group A, with Afghanistan moving up to third.
